Introduction:
Adolescence is a period spanning ages 12-20, during which individuals seek to discover their identity and establish close relationships. Friendship quality plays a crucial role in shaping self-identity, including self-esteem among adolescents. Low-quality friendships can result in low self-esteem. Self-esteem is an individual's assessment of their own worth and capabilities. The consequences of low self-esteem include reduced self-confidence, a tendency to withdraw from social interactions, feelings of worthlessness, and dissatisfaction with oneself. This study aimed to examine the relationship between friendship quality and self-esteem among adolescents at SMA Kolombo Sleman.
Methods:
This quantitative research employed a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population comprised adolescent students at SMA Kolombo Sleman, totaling 183 students. The sample consisted of 125 students selected through stratified random sampling. Research instruments included the Friendship Quality Questionnaire (FQUA) and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI). Data analysis utilized univariate and bivariate methods, specifically the Spearman rank correlation.
Results:
Friendship quality was predominantly in the moderate category, with 78 students (62.4%) falling in this range. Self-esteem was similarly concentrated in the moderate category, with 89 students (71.2%) represented. The Spearman rank test yielded a p-value of 0.001 (<0.05) and a correlation coefficient of 0.559
Conclusion
A significant moderate-strength relationship exists between friendship quality and self-esteem among adolescents at SMA Kolombo Sleman.
