Effectiveness Of Guided Imagery Therapy To Overcome Acute Pain In Post-Operative Patients With Carcinoma Mammae Sinistra: Case Study

Introduction: Breast cancer is a type of malignant disease that poses a threat to all segments of society and is the leading cause of death among women. Breast cancer can be treated through medical intervention via surgical procedures, which may lead to nursing issues such as acute pain. This pain problem can be addressed through pharmacological therapy and supported by non-pharmacological approaches such as guided imagery therapy. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of guided imagery therapy in managing acute pain in post-operative breast cancer patients through a case study approach. Method: Descriptive observational case study design (in-depth case). The subject of this study was a 50-year-old female patient diagnosed with left breast cancer. Guided imagery therapy was administered for 10–15 minutes over three consecutive days, 2 hours after a 30 mg injection of ketorolac. Measurements were taken before and after the intervention, including pain scale, blood pressure, and pulse rate. Results: There was a reduction in pain intensity from severe to mild, accompanied by a decrease in blood pressure and pulse rate following the intervention. Conclusion: The combination of analgesic administration and Guided Imagery therapy is effective in reducing the intensity of acute pain in patients following surgery for left breast cancer. Therefore, this intervention is safe and suitable for use as a nursing intervention in postoperative pain management.
