Introduction:
The increasing older adult population in Indonesia has highlighted the need for effective strategies to improve their quality of life. As individuals age, they commonly experience declines in physical function, psychological well-being, and social interaction, all of which may adversely affect their overall well-being. Therefore, effective, enjoyable, and easily implementable non-pharmacological interventions are needed. Angklung music therapy is a promising intervention because it integrates light physical activity, cognitive stimulation, and social engagement. This community service program aimed to provide training and mentoring in angklung music therapy for older adults and to evaluate its potential benefits on their physical, psychological, and social well-being.
Methods:
This community service program employed an implementation-based approach using educational and participatory methods. The program focused on training and mentoring older adults in angklung music therapy to improve their quality of life. It was conducted at Kayen RT 04/RW 41, Wedomartani, involving 31 older adults from the Wora Wari 3 Elderly Integrated Health Post (Posyandu Lansia). The activities were implemented in three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation.
Results:
The evaluation demonstrated an improvement in the quality of life of the 31 participating older adults following the angklung music therapy program. The number of participants responding "Yes" to all quality-of-life indicators increased in the post-intervention assessment compared with the pre-intervention assessment. The mean quality-of-life score increased from 3.68 (moderate category) before the intervention to 4.45 (good category) after the intervention. The greatest improvement was observed in the mood and emotional well-being domain, with an increase of 19.35%.
Conclusion:
The findings of this community service program suggest that angklung music therapy has the potential to improve the quality of life of older adults. This was evidenced by the increase in the overall quality-of-life score following the intervention, particularly in the psychological and emotional domains. Angklung music therapy may therefore serve as a practical, enjoyable, and easily implemented non-pharmacological intervention to promote the health and well-being of community-dwelling older adults.
